As well as referring to that mystical experience for the coffee fan of “going to origin” we also like to know the “origin” of our coffees – where do they come from?
The current Coffee of the Month is Mexico Muxbal.
Muxbal is located on the slope of the Tacana Volcano, bordering with Guatemala and has been owned by the Rodriguez family since 1959 when Enrique (father of Jorge, the current owner) bought the site. The family invested their lives building the required infrastructure, including roads! Until then coffee had to be taken down the winding tracks by mule.
The day came when Jorge’s dad handed over the reins to him and Jorge is quoted as saying “I have taken up this formidable task since then, and I am grateful for my father who continues to give me his counsel and for the help from so many people”.
The plantation consists of 236 hectares, of which 144 Ha. are planted with coffee of the Catuaí, Mondo Novo and Caturra varieties.
Their main commitment is to integrate the economic, social and ecological aspects of the coffee plantation where, during the harvest up to 350 people live, receive food, lodging and medical attention.
The Rodriguez family goal is to obtain the best cup while leaving the smallest footprint in their fields and as a result have achieved Rainforest Alliance Certification.
Thanks to Neil and the team at Interamerican for introducing us to this amazing coffee and this amazing family.
We love getting to know our suppliers and their stories but at the end of the day if the coffee was not excellent, we would be stuck! And we are delighted to have had such great feedback on this fruity, chocolaty gem of coffee.
Muchísimas gracias a la familia Rodriguez
