So what do we really mean when we say something is biodegradable?
Techie bit
The EN13432 certification is a European standard specifying how much of the bag must degrade within a set period of time. Basically, 90% of the material must degrade completely within 90 days, and at the very least 90% of the fragments left must be smaller than 2mm. The standard allows up to 2% of non-biodegradable content, as long as this does not contain any heavy metals. They will impede plants from growing in the mulch from the degraded materials – this is actually a test parameter for the EN13432 standard for biodegradability.
